UQ Lift

The Brief
In groups, propose a concept that improves user experience on an Ulster University campus elevator. Include the following:

-
Problem statement
-
Photo samples from site
-
Hybrid sketches
-
Low fidelity annotated storyboard
-
Digital walkthrough of prototype made using Adobe XD
The Problem
Ulster University students create congestion in lobby while queuing for lift to get to class.

Students on the Ulster University Belfast campus are creating congestion due to long lift lines. On the ground floor, the areas in front of the lifts are especially congested due to their proximity to the security stations and door for stairs. There are five floors plus the ground floor.

Our Solution: Ulster Queue Lift (UQ Lift)
We propose creating a system that will
-
give students an idea of the amount of lift traffic on other floors;
-
give students estimated queue wait times;
-
organize student lift queues according to the number of people in the lift queueing area (i.e., "Smart Queue"); and
-
entertain students while they wait in the queue.
Each student will download the UQ Lift app on their phones which will create a QR code based on the student's location in the building. Students will be directed where to stand on the "Smart Floor" in front of the lift. (The "Smart Floor" can sense the number of people in a given space.) if more people gather in the space in front of the lift, the icons on the floor will change shape to better organize people. While standing on the "Smart Floor" the student will have a chance to engage in a short, entertaining game of Xs and Os. The student is invited to play on their phone (in app) and their moves are projected onto the lift door screen.

We were inspired by the blue triangles seen from the lift window and decided to incorporate them as a design element.

Hybrid Sketches
We used photos of the Ulster University lobby to brainstorm how we could use the space to its full advantage.

Developing the product

A. In the blue section, we redefine the top three goals for our prospective user: 1) Wait time for the lift; 2) Floor level detail outside of the lift; 3) Visual analogy to indicate how long the user will be waiting for the lift.

B. In the pink section, we sketch three rough wireframes that look at different ways of displaying the most important information on the app.

C. In the yellow section, we sketch a few more wireframes to consider how to symbolically 'locate' the user in the app itself, as well as think through how we want to animate the app to give the user a sense of time passing.

D. In the green section, we consider the movement in the app and talk about whether it would be confusing to show the moving elevator as well as the user's current location and their destination.

E. In the red section, we think through how we might want to visualize each floor within the app animation.
